Author of more than two thousand works

Vincent became increasingly isolated and fervent about religion. His father and uncle sent him to Paris, where he became resentful at how art was treated as a commodity, and he manifested this to the customers. Well, as you may understand, very soon, in 1876, he, basically, was fired.

Van Gogh is an author of more than two thousand works, including about 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life.

But mental problems afflicted him. He cut off part of his left ear following a breakdown in his friendship with another famous artist - Paul Gauguin. He committed himself to the mental hospital, and had limited access to the outside world.

This did not help, though. Van Gogh's depression deepened, and on 27 July 1890, at the age of 37, he walked into the fields and shot himself in the chest with a revolver. Without realizing that he was fatally wounded he died in his bed two days later.
